Summary

07-Ghost stands out in the josei space for pairing a brisk, emotionally charged opening — Teito's flight from the Military Academy and Mikage's wrenching death and reincarnation — with an atmospheric gothic-ecclesiastical setting rendered in Studio Deen's elegant, ornate style. Its strengths are mood, the appealing bishop trio of Frau, Castor, and Labrador, and a melancholic preoccupation with memory, guilt, and atonement that suits its demographic. The German-flavored Barsburg lore and the temperament-based Zaiphon system add distinctive texture. Its central weaknesses, however, are structural: after the strong academy arc the church section grows episodic and padded, the antagonist faction led by Ayanami stays underdeveloped, and the 25-episode run halts mid-story, leaving the Pope conspiracy and the Eye of Mikael unresolved because the anime overtook the manga. As a result it functions more as an enticing prologue than a complete work, rewarding viewers who value tone, character chemistry, and emotional set-pieces over narrative payoff. Solidly good but visibly flawed by its incompleteness, it remains a respectable mid-tier josei fantasy rather than a definitive one — recommended for fans of bishounen-driven gothic drama willing to seek the manga for the conclusion.

Criterion breakdown

Story & narrative

Weight: 25%
6.0

The opening Military Academy arc is genuinely strong — Teito's escape and Mikage's death in the early episodes deliver real emotional stakes and propel the narrative with purpose. However, the church-centered middle section becomes episodic and meandering, padding with examination trials and bishop hijinks, and the anime ends mid-story without resolving the Pope/Eye of Mikael conspiracy, since it caught up to the ongoing manga. The result is a compelling premise left structurally incomplete.

Character writing & growth

Weight: 25%
6.5

Teito's grief over Mikage and his guarded relationship with Frau form a solid emotional core, and Mikage's reincarnation as the fyulong dragon is a memorable, bittersweet device. Frau, Castor, and Labrador are charming and well-differentiated as the bishop trio, but the antagonists — particularly Ayanami and his Black Hawks — remain ciphers whose motivations stay frustratingly underdeveloped within the 25 episodes. Growth largely stalls once the plot loses momentum.

Themes & emotional resonance

Weight: 15%
6.5

Themes of memory, atonement, and the bond between Teito and Mikage carry genuine weight, with Christian-inflected motifs of forgiveness and sacrifice giving the show a melancholic register suited to its josei sensibility. The emotional peaks — Mikage's death and resurrection — land effectively. But the religious symbolism is more decorative than deeply interrogated, and the unfinished story blunts thematic payoff.

World-building & power system

Weight: 15%
6.5

The Zaiphon system, split by temperament into offensive and healing types, is a serviceable if underexplored conceit, and the Barsburg Empire's German nomenclature (sklave, the Seven Ghosts, the Eye of Mikael) lends distinctive flavor. The gothic-ecclesiastical setting of the 7th District Church is atmospheric and original within the demographic. Internal consistency holds, but the lore around the Ghosts and Pater is teased far more than it is delivered.

Animation & direction

Weight: 15%
6.5

Studio Deen delivers a polished, ornate aesthetic with elegant character designs faithful to Yukino Ichihara and Yuki Amemiya's art, and the church interiors and costuming are consistently attractive. Action sequences using Zaiphon are competent but rarely spectacular, and the budget shows in occasional static stretches. The direction excels in mood and the bishop-trio comedy beats more than in dynamic combat.

Cultural impact

Weight: 5%
5.0

07-Ghost found a steady fanbase, particularly among josei and BL-adjacent audiences drawn to the bishop characters, and remains a recognizable title from the Comic Zero Sum stable alongside works like Saiyuki. However, its incomplete adaptation limited lasting influence, and it never achieved the crossover prominence of genre-defining titles in its space.

Synopsis (from MAL)

Barsburg Empire's Military Academy is known for training elites who bring victory to the empire. Students of the academy freely utilize an ability called "Zaiphon" to fight, while the types of Zaiphon usable depends on the nature of the soldier. Teito Klein, a student at the academy, is one of the most promising soldiers produced. Although ridiculed by everyone for being a sklave (German for slave) with no memories of his past, he is befriended by a fellow student called Mikage. While preparing for the final exam, Teito uncovers a dark secret related to his past. When an attempt to assassinate Ayanami, a high-ranking official who killed his father, fails, Teito is locked away awaiting punishment. Only wanting the best for Teito, Mikage helps him escape. Teito ends up at the 7th District Church where he is taken in by the bishops. It is here that Teito attempts to evade the grasp of Ayanami and the Military, so he can rediscover his memories and learn why he is the person that can change the fate of the world.
